For our ERC-advanced grant MAGICON project we purchased a new tool to perfrom small cantilever beding inside our ESEM. Next to cantilever bending we will also do tensile splitting and compression of pillars and also other fancy tests.
The machine that we finally purchased is a Bruker/Hysitron PI 98 SEM picoindenter.
We made this final choice with the help of Sergey Lemeshko and Jaroslav Lukes from Bruker Nano Surfaces & Metrology. They allowed us in March this year to test the machine first with our own samples in Prague (at the university in the SEM of Jiri Nemecek; thank you Jiri).
They convinced us that we need this tool. It was ordered end last week it was delivered and installed in our Microlab in Delft.
Monday we tested our first samples some granite micro-cantilever beams. This resulted in quite stable tests of this brittle material. The reproducability looks great as you can see from the load-displacement curves.
Looking forward to test more! You can follow what we do on www.erc-magicon.eu
