Dental crown (milled from PMMA) Micro-cantilevers (from PMMA) for testing mechanical performance
This week we bought a dental-milling machine (DGShape DWX-52i plus) from Dentalhouse in Veenendaal, the Netherlands.
The funding came from ERC with additional funding from stichting SKKB (Stimulering Kennisontwikkeling Kwaliteitsbeheersing Bouwconstructies)
This machine is used by dentists to mill crowns, which you see in the image above.
Within the ERC-MAGICON project project we will use this machine to make small specimens like the cantilever beams (1x1x3 mm) shown above. We will use them to study the ITZ-properties between aggregates and cement paste or between other composite ingredients and binder systems that are used to mimic concrete. Furthermore we will use the tool to study eigenstresses in composite materials.
The research will be conducted in the Microlab at the Civil Engineering Faculty of Delft University of Technology.
We had an instruction session on the use of the machine and the software and started to mill our own samples. This is great fun!
